Minimum-necessary standard
HIPAA requirement to use or disclose only the PHI needed for the task.
The minimum-necessary standard obligates covered entities and business associates to limit PHI use and disclosure to what is reasonably required for the intended purpose. For AI scribe vendors this constrains what audio, transcripts, and note content can be retained, re-used for model training, or shared with sub-processors.
